Prep Profile: New Hampton School
We continue to look at some of the New England area prep schools with New Hampton School. New Hampton is coached by Freddy Petkus, who is heading into his fifth season at the helm of the program and looks to continue building on the success of 2014-15. Though population wise New Hampton should be Class D, they play up in Class A to compete with the best in New England.
With injuries hampering the team mid season last year, New Hampton had to dig deep and fight to finish the season 17-10. The biggest win in the last half of the season was a victory over a talented Tabor team. Heading into the New England Class A playoffs as the 5 seed, Coach Petkus’ club was facing a tough opponent in a very talented Rivers squad, and they fell short.
This season has a promising outlook for New Hampton as they return several key players to the team. Senior Hannah Cuthbertson is a four-year player at New Hampton who brings in leadership qualities and fills whatever role necessary. Though uncommitted to any school at this point, Cuthberson will find a home for herself somewhere next year. Another senior, Frankie Cohen, worked very hard over the summer and is looking to see that hard work translate onto the court. Juniors Becca Ripley, a verbal commit to Miami, Kaitlyn Petrocelli, who has multiple offers herself, and Lala Ocasio return to the team. All three will be looked upon to continue their success from last season. Coach Petkus will be looking for Petrocelli to establish herself early on both ends of the floor. Ocasio is a very tough guard who took 40 charges last season. Junior Katrina Shelbourne dealt with some injuries last year, but returns this year healthy and looking to contribute.
Coach Petkus is also excited about adding newcomers to the team that will definitely help out the program. A post grad, Cailin Dorsey is a 5’11 shooter with length from Raleigh, NC. Senior CeCe Hancock, from Saco, ME is a point guard that will add leadership to the position. Sophomores Eva Hodgson, a 5’9 guard from Rindge, NH, and Valentina Fryou, also a 5’9 guard from Lexington, MA will provide depth at the guard position. Amelia Clearmont is a freshman that has a lot of potential, will also help at the guard position.
Coach Petkus is excited for this upcoming season. He envisions a team where everyone will be competing for time. The tempo will be very fast and up beat because the roster is guard heavy. Overall, the goal is to improve upon their wins and standings from a year ago, aiming for the same big wins with less of the inconsistent losses. This year is all about maturing and treating every team in the league equally. With a good amount of upperclassmen, that should be a goal in reach. Class A is always very difficult and a tough league to compete in, but this is a big year for the team and program.
