Next up in our Prep Profiles, we caught up with Coach Kristen Campopiano from Dexter Southfield. Coach Campopiano has been coaching at Dexter Southfield since 2006. As the varsity team heads into its 11th season, the program has an overall record of 119-90. Consistency and hustle on the court have been the keys to success for the program. The team has made the playoffs nine out of the last 10 seasons, only missing its first year as a varsity program. In 2010, Dexter Southfield won the New England Championship for Class E and followed suit in both 2011 & 2012 in Class D. Coach Campopiano started coaching right out of college after having played four years at Assumption College on a full athletic scholarship. In addition, Coach Campopiano coached the Bay State Legends AAU Team from 2007-2012.
Last season, Dexter Southfield went 12-8 with a schedule that featured many teams that were two or three classes above. Against in-class opponents, the team was 8-3 and made it to the NEPSAC semifinals. It was a very close game with Vermont Academy, and, despite the loss, the team felt the season end on a high note because of the players’ effort. Dexter Southfield has since moved up a level to Class C and will be playing a much tougher schedule in the 2018-2019 season.
The team will be tough to beat when they have home court advantage. The School opened a new Athletics Arena and Fieldhouse last year. The state-of-the-art facility boasts new basketball courts, weight room, training room, and spectator seating. Senior point guard and captain Maeve Dardinski is returning for her final season and joins senior Emily Donato in leading the team both on and off the court. Dardinski is an excellent distributor and easily finds players in the fast break; she’s known for taking it to the hoop and finishing it. Junior captain and lefty Grace Enselek also returns to the team, bringing her height, hard work, and midrange jump shot to the mix. Blake O’Grady and Greta Minos also are expected to have a big year after getting their feet wet last season.
Incoming players include point guard Thai Davis, who brings speed, IQ, excellent court vision, and her stellar jump shot, and Ayah Harper, who will be a force on defense, but can attack the hoop. Guard Natalia Gonyea is an aggressive player and 3 point shooter, and center Maya Hostetler is known for her hustle and rebounding. Both bring length and speed.
Heading into this season, Coach Campopiano and the Dexter Southfield team hope to make it to the NEPSAC Championships and bring home another title. They are new to Class C, which is filled with many tough opponents, so it will be a challenge every time they step on the court, but they are up for it.
There’s plenty to look forward to with this team for this upcoming season!
Head Coach Kristen Campopiano
“I am incredibly excited to work with this particular group of young ladies. They are full of energy and eager to learn and improve their game. Moving up a class will prove for a much more difficult schedule, but we are up for the challenge. We are taking the season day by day and putting a lot of focus on not looking ahead. Most of these girls have a very bright future in basketball and are willing to put in the work it takes to get them there.”
Dexter Southfield is an independent school for students in grades Pre-K through 12. The School’s 36-acre hilltop campus, home to its outstanding academics, athletics, and arts programs and state-of-the-art facilities, is located in Brookline, MA.
