Prep Profiles: Dexter Southfield

Next up in our Prep Profiles, we caught up with Coach Kristen Campopiano from Dexter Southfield. Coach Campopiano has been coaching at Dexter Southfield for the last 12 years. The varsity program is only going into its 10th season. Over the course of the last nine seasons, the program has an overall record of 107-82. The consistency of this program has been a staple over the last nine years having made the playoffs eight out of the nine seasons and the only missed season was for the first year as a varsity program and there was no postseason play. In 2010, Dexter Southfield won the New England Championship for Class E and following suit in both 2011 & 2012 in Class D. Coach Campopiano started coaching right out of college after having played four years at Assumption College on a full athletic scholarship. In addition, Coach Campopiano coached the Bay State Legends AAU Team from 2007-2012.

Last season, Dexter Southfield went 7-12 with a schedule that featured many teams that were two or three classes above. Against in-class opponents, the team went 5-2 and made it to the NEPSAC Championship game. A huge win over Lexington Christian Academy not only knocked LCA from the tournament, but also gave Dexter Southfield home court advantage in the quarterfinals. Another key memory of the season was getting some revenge on in-class opponent MacDuffie who had beat them during the season by 10 points. Dexter Southfield beat MacDuffie by 3 points on the road in the semifinal game to send them to the New England Championship game.

Junior point guard Maeve Dardinski is a key returning player for this team as she was voted a NEPSAC All-Star last season. She is great at taking the ball to the hoop and finishing. Dardinski is an excellent distributor and easily finds players in the fast break. Another key returner is sophomore center Grace Enselek, who started the season late last year due to an injury. She came on later in the season to help with some big wins. Enselek is a lefty who is a great back to the basket post player and aids in getting many boards.

Greta Minos and Blake O’Grady are some new players who should figure to contribute right away. Minos is a 5’9 freshman that is a very aggressive player. She can shoot and take the ball to the basket. Greta won the 1v1 championship at the Philly Rising Star Camp recently. Although just part of the Class of 2023, O’Grady can shoot and drive. She is aggressive on defense and can grab boards.

Heading into this season, Coach Campopiano and the Dexter Southfield team hope to make it back to the Class D NEPSAC Championships, where their season ended last year. Class D is filled with many tough opponents, so it will be a challenge every time they step on the court. In addition, a brand new Athletic and Wellness Facility will be opening this November. The new fieldhouse will include three new basketball courts, eight additional locker rooms, state-of-the-art weight room and conditioning area, and training room. The building will be connected to the renovated Arena, with new ice surface, viewing room, and spectator seating. These facilities will be open and available to all Dexter Southfield students, but this 2017-18 Dexter Southfield team is very excited to get in there for this basketball season.

There’s plenty to look forward to with this team for this upcoming season!
